WORLD CLASS CANCER TREATMENT CENTRE COMMISSIONED IN LUTH!
As part of the Federal Government Initiatives to ameliorate Medical Tourism arising from the treatment of Cancer, President Muhammadu Buhari had Commissioned, the Best and First if it’s kind World Class Cancer Center in Sub Sahara Africa at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos.
It is Worthy to note that the Center was a Private- Public Partnership arrangement between Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and LUTH and a Service Maintenance Guarantee for Ten (10) Years
Before now, it on record that Nigeria has only two (2) Working Radiotherapy Machines in the Country thus limiting access to the treatment of this Malignant.
Undoubtedly, the Social and Economic Development impact of this Medical Facilities in enhancing Personnel Capacity Building through Experience, Exposure and Expertise cannot be Quantified while there shall be drastic reduction in the Rate of Death arising from this Non Communicable Disease’s with a lot of Savings in Foreign Exchange arising from Medical Tourism abroad (Since 40% of Total money Spent annually on Medical Tourism is on Cancer related treatment).
According to Professor Francis Durosimi-Etti, Dr Yakub Habeeb and Dr Omolola Salako, the Centre is to Provide World Class Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy Services to Hundred of Thousands of Cancer Patients with the Capacity to Treat three Hundred (300) Patients per Day. The Facilities within the Center include
Three (3) Linear Accelerator’s (with Photon and Electron Beam), CI Simulator for Treatment and Planning System, High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Machine and Modern Chemotherapy Suite among other facilities.
The President Subsequently promised in his delivered Speech that the NSIA- LUTH Model will be replicated in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, moreso across the Country in order to bring quality First Class Cancer Treatment Services to affected Patients.
